Commissioner of Public Lands

Sue Kuehl Pederson

Legislative District 39

Robert J. Sutherland

After high school, I volunteered as an aircraft mechanic in the US Air Force, working on F-4 Phantom fighter jets. I received two awards and an honorable discharge. Later, I earned a Biochemistry degree from Gonzaga University and pursued a career in DNA research and cancer therapy in the Puget Sound area.

Throughout the years, my wife and I have been active in giving back. I served as Treasurer for a 501(c)(3) charity supporting students studying Scottish culture and managed its finances across North America. We have supported causes like the Children’s Hospital in Seattle and coached youth basketball at the Boys & Girls Club. Meanwhile, my wife led the Snohomish County 4H Equine program, where our daughter also participated in teaching horse care.

In my role as a biochemist, I supervised labs conducting stability studies on cancer drugs and collaborated with PhDs to ensure accurate data for FDA submissions. I also served as a State Representative from 2019-2023, learning government intricacies and crafting legislation to benefit Washingtonians.

My comprehensive background equips me to represent you effectively and defend our shared values as your State Representative.
